Inspired by The Firebird ballet and the mythical creature whose brilliant feathers are said to glow like flames, Flight of Fire captures a moment when dancer and Firebird seem to become one.
Her outstretched arms suggest wings as she emerges through a blaze of orange, crimson and gold. I wanted the fire to feel alive, moving with her rather than simply surrounding her, until it becomes difficult to tell where the dancer ends and the Firebird begins.
There is a sense of freedom and release in the painting, that exhilarating moment when energy takes over and something powerful is finally allowed to take flight.
