Firebird was inspired by the legendary ballet and the mythical creature that rises from darkness in a blaze of light. As I painted, I found myself drawn less to the dancer herself and more to the energy surrounding her, as though she were being transformed before our eyes.
The sweeping colour and flowing marks became wings, flames and movement all at once. There is a sense of release in this piece, a moment where restraint disappears and something powerful takes flight.
Part of my new atmospheric collection, Firebird is about renewal, courage and those moments in life when we discover we are capable of far more than we imagined.
